This study examines the intersections of blues and jazz traditions within the context of American musical culture. The fundamental characteristics of jazz art that contributed to the uniqueness of this cultural phenomenon and its wide dissemination and popularization are identified. It is noted that jazz, as a multicultural phenomenon, developed under the influence of European, African, and African-American musical traditions. The general essence of the concept of “blues” is considered. The elements of blues musical culture that had the greatest impact on jazz are analyzed. The shared cultural and historical space of jazz and blues is outlined as a creative laboratory of 20thcentury American music. It is established that the guitar played a significant role in the formation and development of the blues, particularly in the creation of the first blues recordings. The main characteristics that allowed the guitar to become one of the leading instruments in the blues tradition are identified. The importance of the blues’ influence on the development of jazz guitar art is substantiated. The role of the blues in the work of jazz guitarist Barney Kessel is analyzed through the example of his composition “Barney’s Blues”. The piece “Midnight Blue” by jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell is studied as an example of incorporating blues elements into jazz composition. The ways of combining blues form and jazz harmony in Wes Montgomery’s composition “West Coast Blues” are revealed. It is demonstrated that the influence of the blues played a key role in the development of jazz guitar art in the 1950s–1960s. The relevance of further cultural studies of jazz music and its connections with blues and other cultural phenomena of the 20th–21st centuries is justified.
Досліджено шляхи перетину блюзової та джазової традицій в контексті американської музичної культури. Визначено фундаментальні характерні особливості джазового мистецтва, які сформували унікальність цього культурного явища та сприяли його широкому розповсюдженню і популяризації. Зазначено, що джаз як полікультурний феномен в процесі свого становлення зазнав впливу європейського, африканського та афроамериканського музичного мистецтва. Розглянуто загальну сутність поняття «блюз». Проаналізовано елементи блюзової музичної культури, які справили найбільший вплив на джаз. Окреслено спільний для джазу і блюзу культурно-історичний простір як творчу лабораторію американської музики XX століття. Встановлено, що гітара відіграла важливу роль в процесі становлення та розвитку блюзу, зокрема у створенні перших блюзових аудіозаписів. Визначено основні характерні особливості, які дозволили гітарі стати одним з провідних інструментів блюзової музичної традиції. Обґрунтовано важливість блюзового впливу на розвиток мистецтва джазової гітари. Проаналізовано роль блюзу в творчості джазового гітариста Барні Кессела на прикладі композиції «Barney’s Blues». Досліджено п'єсу джазового гітариста Кенні Баррелла «Midnight Blue» як приклад впровадження елементів блюзу в джазову композицію. Виявлено способи поєднання блюзової форми та джазової гармонії в композиції джазового гітариста Веса Монтгомері «West Coast Blues». Доведено, що вплив блюзу відіграв одну з ключових ролей в процесі розвитку мистецтва джазової гітари у 1950–1960-х роках. Обґрунтовано актуальність подальших культурологічних досліджень джазової музики та її взаємозв’язків із блюзом й іншими явищами культури XX–XXI століть.
